National Honor Society Hackensack High School Dismissal/Probation/Disciplinary Procedures Constitution: Article III Section 3 "Any member who falls below the standards which were the basis for his election to membership shall be dropped from the chapter upon recommendation of the National Honor Society Council. When dropped a student must receive a letter stating his removal from the Society. Once a member is dismissed, he is never again eligible for membership in the National Honor Society." By-Law 1 "Members missing 60% of the meetings per semester will be contacted by the Executive Committee of the National Honor Society. They will refer their findings to the Faculty Council. Students have the right of one appeal to the Faculty Council. The Faculty Council has the power to dismiss students from the National Honor Society." It is the Faculty Advisor's responsibility regularly to review each member for compliance with Society standards and obligations, and for the direct day-to-day supervision of the chapter. The Faculty Advisor and/or the Executive Committee shall discipline members for minor infractions, negligence, or failures in fulfilling responsibilities. In the case of infractions judged to require Probation or Dismissal, the matter will be brought to the attention of the Faculty Council; this will normally be done by the Faculty Advisor, but any faculty member or any active student member may present such a matter to the Faculty Council. After a matter deemed to require dismissal or probation is presented to the Faculty Council, the Council may require the student in question to appear before the Council to be interrogated. If the Council considers the facts of the situation clear and not requiring the interrogation of the student, the Council may proceed to vote on the matter. A vote of the majority of the Council members shall be required to dismiss a student or place that student on probation. If the vote has been to dismiss the student or place the student on probation or provide some other punishment or discipline of the student, the Faculty Advisor shall send a letter to the student advising the student of the Council's vote. At this time the student shall surrender the certificate of membership and the pin of the Society. If the student has appeared before the Council or if the student has not been summoned to appear, the student shall have the right to appear before the Council subsequent to the original vote, if the student so requests, to present any evidence, mitigating circumstances, plea for leniency, etc., that the student deems appropriate. After such a presentation by the student and any questioning deemed appropriate or helpful by the members of the Council, the Council will again vote after considering all that the student has presented. This second vote shall be considered final. Any further appeal shall be based only on clear evidence of error on the part of the Faculty Council. Dismissal of members shall not be done lightly and shall be reserved for serious breaches of honor such as cheating, plagarism, and lying, or for serious violations of law or school rules and regulations. In matters of failure to fulfill responsibilities and similar matters which can be cured by the student, a period of probation is to be preferred, and some other disciplinary sactions may be imposed. Final discretion in these matters, however, is reserved to the Faculty Council. If a student shall have a GPA below 3.00 for one semester, that student shall be sent a warning letter and thus be placed on probation; if after the semester of probation the student still has a GPA less than 3.00 for the year the student shall be dismissed following the usual dismissal procedure.
