October 2015

This month was originally named October since "octo" is eight in Latin, and because it was the eighth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, when March was the first month of the year. About 700 BC it became the tenth month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius.

My big event in September was my mother's death on September 4th and her subsequent wake and funeral. We celebrated the 97 years of her life. My parents met in a stage designing class and she and my father worked in theatre during the 1940s. My mother later devoted herself to teaching dance, particularly ballet. Finally, she worked as a secretary and as her mother's caretaker. Then she and her sister, Tecla, enjoyed cruises and became world travelers. She died in the same house in which she was born.
